The hydraulic world is big, encompassing a range of equipment and components, each tailored for specific applications. One such component, often overlooked but crucial, is the fitting. O-Ring Boss (ORB) fittings and AN fittings are two of most popular fittings in North America. These are not just any fittings; they are designed for precision, strength, and most importantly, a leak-free connection.

    What’s ORB Fittings?

O-ring Boss Hydraulic Fittings: Defined by the SAE J1926 standard, ORB fittings are integral to hydraulic and automotive systems. These adapters are comparable to JIC fittings but differ by excluding the 37-degree flare.

What sets O-ring boss fittings apart is the incorporation of an O-ring( Buna/NBR, Viton/FKM), providing an enhanced sealing mechanism. This addition ensures an exceptionally tight seal capable of withstanding high pressures, making it a preferred choice for demanding hydraulic applications.

    What’s AN Fittings?

AN fittings, standing for Air Force – Navy Aeronautical Design Standards, were primarily developed for military aviation systems that comply with MIL-F-5509 specifications and AS4841. Given the critical nature of their application, they were manufactured to the highest specifications and performance standards. However, as time went on, confusion arose. Many fittings in the market claimed to be AN standard, but in reality, they weren’t. This not only caused confusion but also posed potential safety risks.

To address this, a new standard, JIC (Joint Industries Council), was introduced. JIC fittings, often referred to as SAE J514 Flare fittings, were primarily for industrial applications like agriculture. They were similar to AN fittings but had a slightly lower thread quality and were more affordable. Want to know the difference bewteen AN and JIC? Please click here.

The Difference Between ORB and AN?

Standard: ORB fittings comply with SAE J1926 standard; AN fittings comply with MIL-F-5509 specifications and AS4841.

Sealing: ORB fittings create a seal by an-O-ring; AN fittings create a seal by the 37 degree seal flare.

Thread: ORB fittings follow class 2A/2B UN/UNF series threads, designed for an optimal thread fit that balances performance, manufacturing, economy, and convenience; AN fittings follow class 3A/3B UNJ/UNJF radiused root threads. These threads have a root radius that strengthens the thread, offering tighter tolerances and better fatigue life. This makes them ideal for aircraft, aerospace, and military applications.
