In the hydraulic industry, there are lots of fittings and adapters that we need for the hydraulic system. JIC and ORFS fittings are two of most popular fittings in the world, particularly in North America. Today we would like to introduce you the difference between JIC fittings and ORFS fittings.

    JIC Fittings

    What Are JIC Fittings?

JIC (Joint Industry Council) fittings are a popular choice in hydraulic systems, known for their reliable 37° flare cone design. This design ensures a solid metal-to-metal seal, making JIC fittings a common sight in various industries. They use parallel threads and a 37° cone to connect to flared tubes or hose fittings, often as adapters for female SAE swivels. This flexibility is a key feature in their design.

JIC fittings comply with SAE J514 standard, as outlined by ISO 8434-2. This standard sets the general and dimensional requirements for these 37° flared connectors. JIC fittings are versatile, compatible with both ferrous and non-ferrous tubes, and come in sizes ranging from 15/64″ (6 mm) to 2″ (50.8 mm). They’re ideal for high-pressure applications, handling up to 7,700 PSI, and can operate in extreme temperatures, from -425°F (-254°C) to 1200°F (649°C), especially when made of stainless steel. They’re designed to withstand moderate vibration, and special designs using exotic materials can handle even more extreme conditions.

    Applications of JIC Fittings

One of the key aspects of JIC fittings is their use of United National Fine (UNF) straight threads and a 37° flare seating surface. This design eliminates the need for O-rings or tapered threads, relying instead on metal-to-metal contact for sealing. This feature has made JIC fittings a standard in the hydraulics industry, thanks to their dynamic sealing properties, affordability, and wide variety of styles and sizes. They’re commonly used in construction, agriculture, heavy industrial machinery, and the aerospace and automotive industries.

    Advantages of JIC Fititngs

The benefits of JIC fittings include their cost-effectiveness, compatibility with almost any hydraulic system, excellent performance under high and low temperatures at high pressures, and universal acceptance in hydraulic applications. They’re particularly favored in military, aerospace, and plumbing industries.

    What Are ORFS Fittings?

ORFS (O-Ring Face Seal) fittings, on the other hand, are designed specifically to prevent leaks in high-pressure hydraulic systems. They feature a recessed O-ring at the fitting’s face, straight threads, and a machined groove in the male fitting for the O-ring. The flat sealing surface of these fittings reduces the risk of over-torquing, and the recessed seal effectively prevents leakage.

    Advantages of ORFS Fittings

ORFS fittings meet SAE J1453 standard and ISO 8434-3, ORFS fittings are the go-to for O-ring face seal connectors in fluid power metallic tube connections. They’re commonly used in fluid and gas transfer systems, particularly in high-vibration settings, supporting pressures up to 6,000 PSI. Like JIC fittings, ORFS fittings can endure temperatures ranging from -425°F (-254°C) to 1200°F (649°C) when made of stainless steel. However, the temperature rating of the assembly is determined by the O-ring, with the highest rated standard material being EPDM SAE J515 Type II O-rings, suitable for temperatures from -65°F (-53°C) to 300°F (148°C).

    Applications of ORFS Fittings

ORFS fittings are ideal for high vibration applications due to their exceptional sealing capability. Their advantages include easy assembly, excellent vibration resistance, high-pressure ratings, unlimited reusability, and a zero-gap component. Industries like shipbuilding, petrochemical, and off-road construction and agricultural equipment frequently use ORFS fittings.
